The Joy of Melt and Pour Soap Crafting – Review and Giveaway

soap crafting book I love all sorts of crafts, but making soaps is something I have never tried.  I watched a video once that made it look simple enough.  I had great dreams of making handmade soap for everyone’s Christmas gift that year.  The thought of using lye though frightened me and I could never bring myself to order supplies.  However as I recently learned in Lisa Maliga’s book, The Joy of Melt and Pour Soap Crafting, soap making and soap crafting are two different things.  Soap crafting involves the use of a pre-made base that you melt and pour.  It doesn’t involve working with lye.  I am now itching to get to the craft store for supplies to give it a try.

Before I get to my review, I thought I would share a bit with you about the author.

About Lisa Maliga:

Lisa Maliga is a soap crafter and author of 11 books.  From 2004-2009, she ran Everything Shea, a small business where she sold 85+ varieties of handmade soaps.  She is now sharing her extensive soap crafting experience and knowledge in her latest book – The Joy of Melt and Pour Soap Crafting.  You can learn more about Lisa at http://www.lisamaliga.com.

Here’s just a sampling of what you will learn inside The Joy of Melt and Pour Soap Crafting:

  • Why you should make your own soap
  • How to make handcrafted soap in less than 1 hour!
  • Secrets of melt & pour soap crafting
  • Creative labeling & packaging ideas and photos
  • Bestselling soap recipes that are tried and true with photos and step-by-step instructions
  • Fragrance & essential oils information
  • List of reputable soap suppliers

My Thoughts:

What I love most about this book is how detailed it is.  Even a complete soap newbie, like me, will have no problem following her thorough instructions.  Lisa’s passion for soap crafting is evident throughout the book.  After finishing it, I am so excited to give soap crafting a try.  I especially want to try her recipe for Rosemary Lavender Shampoo Bars since I have dried rosemary from last year’s garden.

Lisa features a wide variety of recipes in her book – 40 in all!  Browsing the great selection, I was intrigued by recipes like Lentil Bliss Shampoo Bar, Key Lime Pie Soap (bet that smells amazing!), and Fruit of the Vine Wine Soap.  They definitely feature some ingredients you probably wouldn’t expect to find in soap!  There are also some fun molded soaps that kids would enjoy, like soapsicles.  I know my kids would love those!  If you want to see a sample recipe be sure to check out this tutorial for making Berry Blue Christmas Soap.

Because these recipes all use a melt and pour soap base, they are quick to make.  Most of them can be completed in less than an hour.  That is especially good news for the busy mom who has to fit her crafting in between cooking and caring for her kids.

Although I am mainly interested in making soaps for gift giving, Lisa also included a great section on starting your own handcrafted soap business.  It is so hard for today’s family to survive on one income.  Many of us stay at home moms are looking for ways to earn money from home while still being available for our families.  So I found this section to be extremely helpful.

Whether you want to craft soaps for personal use, gifts, or would like to start a small business, I highly recommend The Joy of Melt and Pour Soap Crafting.  It contains a wealth of information to get you on your way.  If you want a copy of your own, it is available on Amazon and Barnes & Noble.

Lisa has generously agreed to give a copy of her ebook to one lucky A Heart Full of Love reader.  The winner will receive The Joy of Melt and Pour Soap Crafting in their choice of Kindle, Nook, or PDF format.  Entry is easy through the Rafflecopter form below.
